UK developer pay in 2026: the actual distribution, not a banding table

A developer desk seen from behind with two monitors angled away, a mechanical keyboard and a mug, an office window with grey daylight beyond

Every salary article you have read this year was recruiter data. Self-selected, unpublished method, no sample size, and a “senior” band that means whatever the agency needed it to mean.

This one is the Office for National Statistics, read out of the source file. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings covers 343,000 full-time jobs under SOC 2134, Programmers and software development professionals, and it is the only dataset on UK developer pay with a published methodology.

Two things it does not have, and you should know before you scroll: ASHE has no seniority axis and no city axis. There is no statistical definition of a senior developer anywhere in official data, and the geography is published by region, not by city. Anyone selling you a “junior, mid, senior by city” table built anything except the survey.

What it has instead is the distribution, which is more useful.

The distribution

Gross annual pay, full-time employees on adult rates who had been in the job at least a year, April 2025. Figures are from ASHE Table 14.

Percentile Gross annual pay
10th £32,835
20th £39,105
25th £42,289
30th £45,101
40th £51,000
Median £56,914
60th £64,103
70th £71,126
75th £75,794
80th £82,503
90th £102,860

Mean is £63,810, well above the median, which tells you the shape before you read another line.

Bar chart of UK developer gross annual pay by percentile, from 32,835 pounds at the 10th to 102,860 pounds at the 90th, with the median at 56,914

Three readings that matter operationally

The occupation pays 45.8% above the national median. All full-time employees across all occupations sat at £39,039. That is the premium for the job title itself, before any question of who is good at it.

The middle half of the profession earns between £42,289 and £75,794. If your number is inside that band you are unremarkable in the statistical sense, whatever your job title says. The interquartile range is £33,505 wide, which is most of a second salary.

The top decile detaches. The step from the 70th to the 75th percentile is £4,668. The step from the 80th to the 90th is £20,357. The distribution has a long right tail, and it is not a smooth ladder you climb one rung at a time. Somewhere past the 80th percentile the market stops paying for the same thing it was paying for below it.

That last point is the only genuinely actionable thing in this dataset. Moving from the 40th to the 60th percentile is a £13,103 move and is mostly about tenure and negotiation. Moving from the 80th to the 90th is a £20,357 move and is not.

Geography: regions, because ASHE does not do cities

The regional figures come from ASHE Table 15, which crosses region by four-digit occupation.

Region Median Against the UK median
London £75,296 +32.3%
East £60,989 +7.2%
North East £56,340 -1.0%
South West £53,438 -6.1%
South East £52,798 -7.2%
North West £50,336 -11.6%
East Midlands £49,685 -12.7%
West Midlands £49,081 -13.8%
Scotland £48,930 -14.0%
Wales £48,346 -15.1%
Yorkshire and The Humber £47,908 -15.8%

London to Yorkshire is £27,388, a 57.2% premium on the lower figure. London also carries 94,000 of the 343,000 jobs and posted the largest annual rise in the table at 10.3%.

Two cautions on this table, because it is the one people misuse.

ASHE codes by workplace, not residence. A fully remote employee attached to a London office appears in London. The regional gap is therefore not a clean measure of what the same job pays in two places; it is partly a measure of where employers are registered.

The North East figure is unreliable. ONS suppressed the job count as too small to publish, and reported no annual change. Treat £56,340 as a small-sample estimate, not as evidence that Newcastle pays better than Manchester.

Where the adjacent codes sit

Useful if you are arguing about a title change rather than a pay rise.

SOC Occupation Median Jobs
1137 Information technology directors £91,671 56,000
2131 IT project managers £58,373 29,000
2134 Programmers and software development professionals £56,914 343,000
2135 Cyber security professionals £54,647 26,000
2139 IT professionals not elsewhere classified £54,107 56,000
313 IT technicians £35,635 241,000

Cyber security posted the fastest rise in the group at 12.5%, off the smallest base. Moving from 2134 to 2131 is a £1,459 median move, which is worth knowing before you take a project management title for the money.

What this dataset cannot tell you

Stated plainly, because the limits are as operationally relevant as the figures.

It is employees only. Contractors outside IR35 do not appear. If you are inside IR35 and comparing a day rate to these figures, you are comparing gross annual pay with a rate that has to cover your own employer costs and empty weeks.

It excludes equity. ASHE captures gross annual pay including incentive payments, but an EMI option grant that has not been exercised is not pay in any year, and a grant that vests over four years shows up unevenly or not at all. For anyone at a company where options are the pitch, this table understates total compensation and there is no public dataset that fixes that.

April 2025 is the reference date, published October 2025 and provisional. Read against CPI at 2.9% in the year to July 2026, the real value of every figure here has moved since it was collected.

The counterweight

The argument against using ASHE at all is that it is a year and a half behind and blind to equity, which for a subset of this profession is most of the story.

That is fair, and it is still the best available. The alternative is recruiter data with an undisclosed sample, a self-selection problem, and a commercial interest in the answer being high. If you are going into a review meeting, a percentile from a government survey with a published method is a harder thing to argue with than a salary guide, and the person across the table knows it.

What to do with it

Find your number in the percentile table before you find it in the regional one. The national distribution is the real conversation and the regional table is mostly about where your employer is registered.

If you are below the 25th percentile with more than two years in the role, that is the gap worth raising, and £42,289 is a specific and citable thing to raise it against.

And if you are already above the 75th, understand that the next move in this dataset is a step change rather than an increment, and that no amount of doing the current job better gets you there.

Fintech Trading: Exploring the Future of Digital Markets

Fintech trading has created new possibilities for investors by combining financial services with advanced digital technology. Online platforms allow users to access market information, analyze investments, and manage portfolios through increasingly sophisticated tools. This development has contributed to a more technology-focused financial environment.

Automation is one of the most notable developments. Certain systems can follow predefined rules to monitor markets and execute transactions. Artificial intelligence can also support data analysis by processing information quickly. These technologies may improve efficiency, but they cannot predict market movements with certainty.

Opportunities and Challenges in Fintech Trading

Fintech platforms can also improve financial education by offering tutorials, market data, simulations, and analytical tools. Beginners can use educational resources and practice environments to develop their understanding before making significant financial decisions.

At the same time, easy access can encourage impulsive behavior. Investors may be tempted to trade frequently because transactions can be completed within seconds. Developing a clear strategy and understanding risk can help prevent decisions based solely on short-term market movements.

Regulation and security will remain important as fintech services expand. Platforms need effective systems for protecting customer information, while users should understand the security features available to them. Investors should also verify the credibility and regulatory status of financial services before using them.

Fintech trading represents an important part of the future of financial markets. Technology can make investing more accessible and efficient, but successful participation still requires knowledge, discipline, research, and responsible risk management.

Fintech Trading: The Role of Digital Innovation in Finance

Fintech trading is changing the way people research, manage, and execute investments. Mobile applications, online brokerage platforms, automated systems, and real-time market data have created a more connected trading environment. Investors can access financial information quickly and manage many activities without visiting a traditional financial institution.

One of the strongest features of fintech is convenience. Digital platforms can provide charts, price alerts, portfolio tracking, educational materials, and transaction tools in one place. This can help investors monitor their strategies and respond to market information more efficiently.

Understanding Digital Trading Tools

Data analytics is another important part of fintech trading. Modern systems can analyze large datasets and present information in ways that may help users understand market conditions. Algorithmic trading can also automate specific trading instructions according to predefined rules.

Despite these advantages, investors should remain responsible for their decisions. Digital platforms can make trading fast and convenient, but excessive trading may increase costs and losses. Users should understand fees, platform features, and the risks associated with different financial products.

Cybersecurity and privacy are equally important. Investors should use reputable platforms, protect login credentials, and be cautious about suspicious messages or links. Financial technology provides convenience, but safe digital habits are necessary to protect accounts.

Fintech trading will likely continue evolving as artificial intelligence, automation, and data technology improve. Investors who understand both the benefits and limitations of these tools can use technology more effectively while maintaining realistic expectations.

Fintech Trading: Transforming the Modern Trading Experience

Fintech trading combines financial technology with modern investment and trading services. Digital platforms have made it easier for individuals to access financial markets, monitor prices, analyze information, and manage investments from computers and mobile devices. These developments have changed how many people interact with financial markets.

One major advantage of fintech trading is accessibility. Traditional financial services may require extensive paperwork or specialized assistance, while many digital platforms provide user-friendly interfaces and online account management. Investors can often view market information, track portfolios, and execute transactions through a single platform.

Technology and Modern Trading

Artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics, and algorithmic systems are also becoming important in fintech trading. These technologies can process large amounts of market information and help identify patterns or trends. Some platforms provide automated tools that can assist with portfolio management and financial analysis.

However, technology does not eliminate investment risk. Markets can move unexpectedly, and automated systems may produce poor results when conditions change. Investors should understand how digital trading tools work before relying on them and should avoid assuming that technology guarantees profits.

Security is another important consideration. Fintech platforms handle sensitive financial information, making account protection essential. Strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, secure devices, and careful monitoring can help reduce cybersecurity risks.

Overall, fintech trading has made financial markets more accessible and technology-driven. With responsible use, proper research, and awareness of risk, digital trading tools can provide valuable support for modern investors.
